review 1: Denise baru saja bercerai dari suaminya yang kaya raya. Dia mendapati suaminya berselingkuh dengan sekretarisnya. Denise kemudian pergi meninggalkan suaminya dan hidup bersama ibunya, seorang penulis novel romance bestseller, di Boston. Untuk menghidupi dirinya, Denise bekerja sebagai penyiar radio. Wajahnya yg cantik membuatnya dijadikan sebagai ikon radio tersebut. Dave, sales manager di radio tempat Denise bekerja sudah jatuh cinta pada pandangan pertama pada Denise. Namun Dave merasa Denise berada di luar jangkauannya. Begitu mengetahui Denise adalah putri dari seorang penulis novel romance, Dave dan kedua sahabatnya, Kirk dan Ghoulie, melakukan riset mengenai cara mendekati Denise lewat membaca beberapa buku romance koleksi istri Ghoulie.Yang menarik adalah ketika ket... moreiga pria ini membahas isi dari novel romance yang mereka baca. Beberapa kesimpulan mereka adalah bahwa karakter cowok selalu tampil bak superman, dan karakter wanitanya selalu mempermasalahkan tiga kata ajaib untuk diucapkan pada mereka. Yang pasti selalu ada adegan hot pada buku yang mereka baca. Dan itu jg mereka bahas. LOL.Kalau hubungan Dave dan Denise sendiri cukup aman.. tertata rapi dari awal hingga akhir. Ga ada kejutan, standar. Saya malah menyukai interaksi Dave bersama ketiga temannya saat berdiskusi soal novel romance. Yang pasti ketiganya jadi kecanduan membaca romance :)
review 2: I received this as an ARC and found myself charmed by Mary Gorman's story. Dave, a non-traditional hero for a romance, meets his dream woman at work. Denise is a beautiful on air personality at a radio station (love the job setting) who recently divorced the kind of man most romances are built around. Because Denise's mother is a romance novelest, Dave concocts a plan for winning Denise's heart by using romance novels as his guide. Gorman has a lot of fun playing with the tropes (or some non-readers of romance may say cliches) of the romance genre. I particularly enjoyed the scenes where Dave and his male friends discussed the romance novels they read. Even the chapter titles played with these expectations, and yet the character journey was not predictable. You could read this book without much previous familiarity with romance novels, but I suspect it is more fun if you know how things are "supposed" to go. Overall, Love's Little Instruction book was an enjoyable, quick, and clever read. less
